What kind of computer should I use if I’m studying Graphic Design?
Saturday, March 6th, 2010 @ 8:40 pm | Laptop
I use Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, (and itunes haha) etc a lot and I think its time for a new computer.
I REALLY want a portable computer, though. Like a laptop..but is it really possible to have a good laptop for design work?
Should I get a PC or Mac?
Im just so lost when it comes to computers and my Windows Vista laptop I have now is pretty horribly slow when I do school work.
Can anyone guide me?!
thanks for all your help if u help!

Get a MacBook 2.4 GHz with 4 GB Ram. Mac’s Rule.

lots of people will say mac because lots of design firms use them, and some people are convinced they are better for graphics. But the truth is, it doesn’t really matter. I do excellent design work with Windows, a Mac, and even Linux. All of them do a damn fine job with NO discernable difference in quality. So, go with what you are comfortable using. I would advise against windows vista though because it is clunky, slow, and requires lots of memory.

I really would advise against getting a laptop if you can help it. I have an iMac for all of my graphic design and love it. I have Adobe CS3 Design Premium and my iMac can really keep up with it. If you really can’t say no to a laptop, just get a Macbook. Or if you can swing it, get an iMac and a cheaper laptop with just Photoshop and Illustrator on it, thats what I do. I bought an iBook on eBay for $139.99 and use it to stroll around San Francisco and use it at all of my favorite cafe’s.

whatever you do, do not get a mac since they aren’t upgradeable.

get a mac book pro they are the best thing out there for any kind of design. I use a mac at home and also have a mac book pro for my photography business. You wouldn’t know it but Adobe software actually works better and faster with mac’s then with windows. I use Photoshop and Illustrator and flash to name a few. I have access to a pc laptop at my studio also and its not the same thing even though all the specs are a little better then my mac book. I loved it so much that i bought my sister one also she’s a photographer also. So good luck and enjoy.

Save your money and get a PC with Vista (SP1 has improved many things and with a click or two you can significantly speed up Vista by turning off Aero, get free versions of Avast/Avira Antivir, Comodo Firewall, CCleaner), Then download Linux such as Ubuntu and install free profesional graphic/video software such as blender, inkscape, gimp, cinelerra, etc…You will save tons of money doing this.
Some good linux distributions are Ubuntu (most popular linux and well supported, Kubuntu KDE windowing Environment for Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS nicely implemented KDE linux, Freespire Linux with windows codecs included out of the box)
Installing software for the most part is easy on Linux. Simply click on Add/Remove and check the software you want, or Synaptic Package Manager (Under System->Administration) check the box you want and click install. (You have to apply before changes take effect)
osalt.com will give you some nice free alternatives to proprietary software. Why spend it if you can get it for free?
Then learn more about X Windows Desktops like KDE and Gnome..
