Fun on your Portable Laptop: Casual Gaming
I’m sure many of you have been at work or at home, idly letting hours pass you by. I’m also sure that many of you already play several of these games – most of them are easy, and more are fun. The best games though, are the ones which fulfill several factors.
First is simplicity with depth. The games should first be easy for anyone to start playing. At the same time, there should be a certain depth to the game play. This can mean that the basis of a game is a set of simple actions, which if combined leads to complex strategies. Think like chess – the rules are simple, but the game is difficult to master.
Second is addictivity. The best online games are the ones which hook you and have you coming back time after time. Of course, a game that is too addictive is unfortunate, since it can interfere with your life!
Third, and most importantly, is how long you can play per day. The best choices are games which only require a few minutes a day to play.
So now I’ll introduce a few games I enjoy playing!
Ogame: a space empire-simulation. With a large number of units, buildings, and research, it certainly fits the first requirement. It can also be managed with one short login per day, especially once building times get very large – it is more time intensive at the start. It’s only moderately addicitive – which I think is a great level. If you like empire simulations, it’s a good one to try!
Nodiatis: a unique RPG set in a dark world. Game play is simple, and can be learned in minutes. It also has a huge number of classes and skills. Unfortunately, the amount of time required to advance at a respectable rate is around an hour a day, which I think is a bit much for most people, especially students. It’s very addictive at the start, but once leveling becomes extremely difficult it becomes markedly less fun, since you have to spend several minutes fighting the same enemy over and over. I’d recommend it as a try.
Kings of Chaos: this one is a little hard to classify – game play consists of getting soldiers, training them in defense or offense, arming them, and attacking an enemy. It’s very simple, and gives huge advantages to anyone who can invite large numbers of friends. By clicking on other peoples’ links you give them soldiers and get some for yourself. It’s also designed for extremely short playtimes – you can only attack once every two hours or so. You can however, keep recruiting soldiers while you wait. It’s very fun, especially if you invite your friends and compete with them. I’d recommend it strongly right now, since it fulfills the criteria above very well.
For a huge number of other miscellaneous games, try Kongregate. It’s a great source for a varied number of games, but at the same time can become tedious. Good luck making your free time more fun!
